Creative from a young age
I have always been at my happiest when I was painting, sculpting and generally making things, whether it be from clay or from things I found. When I was around the age of 7 my parents bought me a large water colour pad and some paints. I can remember painting a yellow cottage and I was quite shocked at how well I had done. The painting is still at home along with the other sketch pads and numerous other pieces of work which have built up as my art work has progressed.
I gradually moved on from water colour because I enjoyed the vivid colours and sculptural qualities you can achieve from using acrylic paint.
I have always had an eye for texture, I love experimenting, trying to find interesting ways to manipulate a surface. I spent a lot of time at collage and university working with textures in my sculptural work and I have taken these techniques to some degree and applied them to my paintings.
My work consists mainly of bold, funky colours and striking combinations which encompass raw, deep texture and smooth shimmery surfaces. Experimenting has been the main reason why I enjoy making art. I'm constantly trying to find original designs and ways to apply the paint.
Working from my Manchester based studio, I sell work under the name LaJoJo Art via the Internet, Art fairs and Galleries.
Influences
I can't really explain what influences me, everything from my dreams to the natural world, landscape vistas to microcosms of detail. It all seeps in, becomes fragmented and collects itself, forming shapes and colours upon my canvases.
I'm currently working on wall sculptures which have a metropolis feel to them.
"Some of my new artwork conjours up images of a metropolis where metallic skyscrapers glint in the moonlight and an ocean of colour is met with a towering blockade of shimmering metal".
Education
I studied art at A-level and continued my studies at Manchester Metropolitan University, completing a foundation course and a degree in fine Art, graduating in June 2003.
